Aston Villa has earned a narrow first-leg lead in the Europa Conference League quarterfinals after a 1-2 victory over Lille on Thursday. In front of a special guest, the Prince of Wales, the Villans secured a valuable away advantage.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for Villa in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from the French club. John McGinn doubled the lead just before halftime, giving Villa a comfortable cushion going into the break.
Lille fought back in the second half and pulled one back through Jonathan David in the 70th minute. However, Villa held on for the victory, giving them a slight advantage heading into the second leg.
The return leg will be played at Villa Park on April 25. With the support of their home crowd, Villa will be confident of securing a place in the semi-finals.
